Mastichari on the north coast of Kos: the beach, the windsurfing, the fish tavernas and the boats to Kalymnos and Pserimos. 15 minutes from Kardamena.
Mastichari is a fishing harbour on the north coast, 22 km west of Kos Town and the closest port to the airport. Small boats leave every day for Kalymnos, right across the water, and for the islet of Pserimos.
The fishermen still work from here, which is why the tavernas on the harbour serve fish that came in that morning. Sit at one of the tables twenty metres from the water and order whatever they recommend.
The beach is long, with white sand and very clear water. The north coast catches the summer wind, so the bay is a favourite with windsurfers, and there's a school for anyone who wants to learn.
A short walk from the sea are the remains of the Early Christian basilica of Agios Ioannis, with parts of its mosaic floor still in place.
